New Delhi, May 20 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday congratulated Iranian President Hassan Rouhani after he won the 12th Presidential elections.

Modi said Iran will continue to achieve new heights under the dynamic leadership of the President.

"Heartiest congratulations to my friend, President @HassanRouhani on his re-election," Modi tweeted.

He said: "Iran will continue to achieve new heights under the dynamic leadership of President @HassanRouhani."

Modi said India remained committed to strengthening our special relationship with Iran.

The Indian PM tweeted: "India remains committed to strengthening our special relationship with Iran. @HassanRouhani."

Iran's reformist President Hassan Rouhani retained power for the second term as he scored a thumping victory in the country's presidential election over his principlist rival, Ebrahim Raisi, Aljazeera reported.

With nearly 40 million votes in Friday's hard-fought poll counted so far on Saturday, Rouhani was leading the race with 56.88 percent, the report said quoting the interior ministry.

Raisi, his closest rival, won 38.55 percent of the vote.

Mostafa Mirsalim, a conservative, got 1.13 percent, while reformist Mostafa Hashemitaba got 0.52 percent.

A big turnout on Friday, estimated at more than 40 million out of 56 million registered voters, led to the vote being extended by several hours.
