Narendra Modi made tall promises: Manmohan Singh attacks

New Delhi, Mar 18 (IBNS): Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday targeted the current Central government over numerous issues and said its expenditure in defence sector is 'inadequate'.

"The defense expenditure of our country is no more than 1.6% of our GDP. This is far too inadequate to meet the challenges of our security apparatus and our needs," Manmohan Singh said in the Congress Plenary session here.

He said current Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who replaced him after 2014 Lok Sabha victory, only made 'tall promises' and its implementation in the present scenario is 'unthinkable'.

"The BJP Govt. made tall promises. PM Modi himself said that his Govt will double farmers' income. For that, a growth rate of 12% p.a. is necessary which is unthinkable in the current scenario," Singh said.

Singh also accused that the current government at the Centre has 'mismanaged issues in J&K like never before'.

"The Modi govt. has mismanaged issues in J&K like never before. They have installed a Govt where the two wings of the administration are working against each other. The atmosphere is deteriorating everyday," Singh said as he hinted at the BJP-PDP alliance in the state.

Singh said the Congress will be able to provide the nation a new pathway to handle the upcoming challenges faced by it.

"India stands at the crossroads. We have opportunities, but we also have challenges. The Congress party will provide a new pathway to chalk out the future of our country," Singh said.

The Congress meet started on Saturday.

Speaking about cross-border terrorism, Singh said: "The support Pakistan gives to cross-border terrorism is certainly not acceptable to us. We should warn Pakistan that their actions are detrimental to peace and prosperity."

Singh said the Congress party made India what it is today.
