Navy Day: Why India celebrates this day?
New Delhi/IBNS: As India celebrates its Navy Day on Wednesday, IBNS looks back at its history to trace the significance of the day. This year's Navy Day also comes on the heels of Sub-Lieutenant Shivangi of Indian Navy becoming the first naval woman pilot as she joined operational duties at its base in Kochi two days ago.
The country celebrates the Navy Day on Dec 4 to recognise the achievements and role of the Navy.
On Dec 4, 1971, the Indian Navy during the Operation Trident killed hundreds of Pakistani Navy personnel by sinking four Pakistani vessels.
The day also marks the remembrance of all those who were killed in the Indo-Pakistan War in 1971, the year which led to the creation of Bangladesh. On this day, the ships of the Indian Navy led a deadly attack on Karachi Harbour during the war.
The Indian Navy, which is led by President as the Commander-in-Chief, has a significant role in securing the marine borders of the country and also enhancing the international relations of India.
On the occasion, Indian Navy has put up a tweet, "Indian Air Force wishes all ranks of @indiannavy on the occasion of Navy Day 2019. It was on this day; 04 Dec 1971, ships of the Indian Navy led a deadly attack on Karachi Harbour during the #IndoPakWar 1971."
