NDRF team and others conduct search and rescue in Mumbai-Goa highway bridge collapse
The British-era bridge collapsed around two am on Wednesday, NDTV reported.
An Indian air force helicopter has also been pressed into service. Local rafting associations have also joined the search.
"Two bodies recovered during search operations following bridge collapse in Raigad of #Maharashtra," tweeted All India Radio News
Eight navy divers, who are on their way to Mahad, will also join the search team later on Wednesday.
According to media reports, two state transport buses with about 20 passengers and several vehicles fell into the river.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis tweeted: "Spoke to Raigad SP & Collector about bridge collapse on Mumbai-Goa highway. Administration has rushed to spot for rescue&immediate measures."
He said the primary reason behind the collapse seems to be the high pressure caused due to flooding of river Savitri due to heavy rains in catchment of Mahabaleshwar.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the issue.
"PM @narendramodi offered all help in rescue and relief operations.NDRF teams are already activated.@NDRFHQ ," CMO Maharashtra tweeted.
