Nepal: 27 Indian tourists killed after bus falls into river, 16 injured

Kathmandu/IBNS: Twenty-seven Indian tourists were killed and 16 others were injured after a bus fell off a highway into a river, media reports said.

The victims were mostly from Maharashtra's Jalgaon district.

The bus fell off the highway and plunged into the Marsyangdi River.

There were 43 passengers on board the bus that was en route to Kathmandu from Pokhara.

The rescue teams faced severe challenges battling out the river and its currents.

Ministry of External Affairs, India, spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on X, " We are deeply pained by the tragic death of 27 Indian nationals in a road accident in Tanahun district of Nepal. We convey our deepest condolences. Our Embassy is extending all possible help in the matter. 16 people who were injured in the accident have been airlifted and are presently undergoing treatment in a hospital.

"Embassy has set up emergency helpline numbers for affected families to reach out for assistance. They are in constant touch with local authorities and with affected families and are making arrangement for early transportation of mortal remains to India. Embassy would be giving regular updates on the matter."

Prime Minsiter Narendra Modi wrote on X, "Saddened by the loss of lives due to a road mishap in Tanahun district, Nepal. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover at the earliest. The Indian Embassy is providing all possible assistance to those affected."
