Kochi/UNI: A National Investigation Agency Court here on Monday sentenced Subahani Haja Moideen to life imprisonment for joining ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria ) and waging a war against Asian countries.

Judge P Krishna Kumar also slapped a fine of Rs one lakh against him. It is the first case in Kerala registered by NIA against an ISIS member for waging war against the neighbouring countries.

According to the chargesheet, Subahani (34) a native of Thodupuzha, entered Iraq in 2015, joined ISIS, received weapons training and was deployed with others on the battle field near Mosul in Iraq.

NIA had taken Subahani into custody in 2016 along with other accused from Kannur in a case of conspiracy to commit anti-national activities.

The probe team had found that Subahani had planned to spread ISIS activities in Kerala and Tamil Nadu and to assassinate prominent people.

NIA also found that Subahani, after returning to India from his mission in Iraq, had recruited 15 persons for ISIS activities through social media. He had also communicated with ISIS centres through social media platforms.

Subahani planned to collect explosives from Sivakasi and carry out blasts in crowded places, the chargesheet said.
