Nitish Kumar objects to NHRC team visiting Bihar to probe hooch tragedy

Patna/UNI: Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday took strong exception to a team of the National Human Rights Commission visiting Bihar to probe the hooch tragedy in the Saran district and asked whether the NHRC team probed similar incidents in other states.

Kumar told media persons here that the number of hooch tragedies and consequent deaths was much higher in other states, an oblique reference to BJP-ruled ones.

Whether the NHRC team visited other states to probe hooch tragedies as the team had reached Bihar to investigate the incident, he asked.

"Those opposing liquor ban should read and understand provisions of the constitution," Chief Minister said adding that the government had every right to impose liquor ban in the larger interest of the people.

In the liquor ban law, his government had made provisions to impose fines on those responsible for hooch tragedy deaths, he added.

Kumar said that the liquor ban was imposed with the support of all parties in both Houses of the state legislature.

People should learn from the incidents that those consuming liquor could lose their lives in the event of it being spurious, he added.

The Chief Minister, responding to a query about the chances of Covid-19 cases increasing again, said that the state government was on alert.

In Bihar, more tests were being done than the national average to detect Corona positive cases, he added.
