Decorated with Kirti Chakra, the second-highest peace time award, Mr Doval is a retired officer of the Indian Police Service and the fifth NSA of India.

He was Intelligence Bureau director in 2004 to 2005 after spending a decade as head of the 'Operation wing' of the Bureau.
