The opposition alliance, led by the Congress, on Tuesday moved a no-confidence motion against Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar, alleging partisan function of the house.

This was the first time such an incident occurred in the Indian Parliament.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh posted on X: "For the first time in the 72-year history of the Rajya Sabha, Opposition Parties have formally submitted a no-confidence motion against the Chairman."

Sources in one of the Opposition parties told The Indian Express that the motion had been moved with 65 signatures.

The processings in the house were washed out within hours after it started with the Bharatiya Janata Party accusing the Congress of colluding with billionaire investor George Soros to “harm” the country.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday accused Sonia Gandhi, a former Congress president, of having ties to an organisation funded by the George Soros Foundation, which has supported the idea of Kashmir as an independent nation.

The ruling party earlier claimed in a series of posts on X that this connection reflects the influence of foreign entities on India’s domestic matters.
