Opposition parties threaten to move SC on EVM malfunction issue
New Delhi, Apr 14 (IBNS): Opposition parties have threatened to move the Supreme Court on the issue of malfunctioning EVMs because they said the Election Commission was not doing enough to address their concerns.
At a press conference here, Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi said: "Questions were raised after the first phase of Lok Sabha elections. If you press the button before X party, vote goes to Y party. VVPAT displays only for 3 seconds, instead of 7 seconds."
The press conference was held after a meeting of Opposition party leaders.
Andhra Pradesh chief minister and TDP supremo Chandrababu Naidu, who attended the meeting, said: "We have been raising this issue for the last several days. There's prejudice in transfer of the officers. Looking into this matter is democratic compulsion."
"The Election Commission said if we count the VVPAT slips, it will take them more than five days. We told the ECI to increase the strength of their team. It shouldn't take five days," Singhvi said more polling officials were needed to speed up the process.
The Congress leader also alleged the VVPATs were faulty and that people were complaining of being shown the slip of a party they did not vote for.
