P Chidambaram, son Karti granted anticipatory bail in Aircel-Maxis case

New Delhi: After a series of setbacks in the INX Media case, former Union Finance and Home Minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti was on Thursday granted anticipatory bail in the Aircel-Maxis case by a special court, media reports said.

The court has directed both P Chidambaram and Karti to join the probe into the case, which is getting investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED).

The CBI had said two illegal payments were given to Karti's firms, Chess Management and Advantage Strategic, during the Aircel-Maxis deal.

The federal probe agency has alleged that Maxis had paid Rs. 3,200 cr to take over Aircel while then Union Finance Minister Chidambaram had powers to clear only Rs. 600 cr.

However, in the file, it was shown that only Rs. 180 cr was cleared.

Earlier in the day, the senior Chidambaram was denied an interim protection from the ED arrest in the INX Media case.

The former Finance Minister is already in the custody of the CBI which is probing the INX Media case.

Chidambaram, a senior Congress leader, was arrested last month.
