Pettimudi landslide : 6 more bodies recovered, toll rises to 49
Idukki/UNI: The death toll in the massive landslide, that destroyed a row of 30 houses of tea estate workers in the high range Pettimudi near Rajamalai here, climbed to 49 on Monday, as six more bodies have been recovered.
The efforts to find the missing persons were continuing despite heavy rains.
The bodies were found from the nearby river and they are yet to be identified.
The scuba team of the fire service recovered the bodies from the river. It was assumed that they might have been washed away to the river along with mud.
As per reports, the rescue operations team decided to search the river after finding debris from the landslip in the river near Mankulam area.
An amount of Rs 5 lakh was announced as emergency assistance for those who lost their lives. It is becoming difficult to ascertain the number of people caught under the debris in Rajamala-Pettimudi landslip on August six.
According to Kannan Devan company, which owns the estate, 22 more people are yet to be found. Only 12 persons survived the landslide that flattened a line of dwellings.
As per the company report, 83 people lived in the affected 'line houses' while the Revenue Department count indicated 78 people.
