New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested Mohammed Gaus Niyazi, a prime target for the agency, in South Africa, accused of the murder of an RSS leader.

Niyazi, who had a bounty of 5 lakh rupees on him and is a key figure of the proscribed Popular Front of India (PFI), is accused of murdering RSS leader Rudresh in Bangalore in 2016.

After the crime, Niyazi managed to evade law enforcement by living in various countries.

The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) took the initiative to monitor Niyazi's movements, eventually sharing vital intelligence with the central agency.

Later, South African law enforcement agencies were alerted, leading to the successful arrest of the fugitive in the country.

Niyazi's alleged role in Rudresh's assassination had sparked an outrage across the country, sparking an intense manhunt by law enforcement authorities.

Following his arrest in South Africa, extradition proceedings were initiated, with Niyazi now being extradited to India.

Reports indicate that he is presently being transported to Mumbai, where he will stand trial for his purported role in the killing of the RSS leader.
