New Delhi, Nov 15 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid homage to Bhagwan Birsa Munda on his birth anniversary.

He was an Indian tribal freedom fighter, religious leader and folk hero who belonged to the Munda tribe.

"I pay homage to Bhagwan Birsa Munda on his birth anniversary and recall his courage and efforts towards empowerment of tribal communities," the Prime Minister said.

Munda had spearheaded an Indian tribal indigenous religious millenarian movement that rose in the tribal beltof modern-day Bihar and Jharkhand in the late 19th century, during the British Raj, thereby making him an important figure in the history of the Indian independence movement.
