Poets, painters lead anti-CAA protest in Assam
Guwahati/UNI: Poets, painters and singers led the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019, protest in Assam today as they composed new poems, recited old ones and used the painting canvas to oppose the legislation.
The artists led the protest, organized by All Assam Students Union (AASU), at different parts of the state, including in Guwahati.
In the main city, the artists assembled at Latasil Field since morning, using their own skill set to protest the CAA.
Veteran artists joined the emerging ones, with the general public also participating in large numbers, in the protest.
Paintings against the CAA were drawn at the protest venue, while poems narrating the current turmoil of the state were recited along with timeless compositions of legends of yesteryears.
Songs were also performed to stir the patriotic feelings among the general public.
Similar protests were also organized at different parts of the state, including at Dhemaji.
Assam has been in grips of protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019, that seeks to grant Indian citizenship to illegal Hindu, Parsi, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist and Christian migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, who had entered India prior to December 31, 2014, without any documents.
People of North Eastern states, especially Assam and Tripura, are demanding its revocation as they fear being ‘overrun’ by non-Muslims from neighbouring Bangladesh.
