Police arrest 11 people for chopping off Punjab cop’s hand during Covid-19 curfew
Patiala/IBNS: The police have arrested 11 people, including a woman, for allegedly chopping off the hand of a cop when the personnel tried to enforce COVID-19 lockdown on Sunday morning in Patiala district of the state.
They were arrested from Balbera Gurdwara in the district.
Police said Rs 39 lakh recovered in cash from them
The cache of unlicensed weapons also recovered from them by the police.
The attacked officer, who was identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police Harjeet Singh, was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Two other policemen were also attacked in the Sanaur vegetable market of the district by the locals, a group of Nihangs.
Confirming the incident, Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Police Dinkar Gupta tweeted: "In an unfortunate incident today morning, a group of Nihangs injured a few Police officers and a Mandi Board official at Sabzi Mandi, Patiala. ASI Harjeet Singh whose hand got cut-off has reached PGI Chandigarh."
He said a plastic surgeon has been deputed for surgery of the cop whose hand was chopped off.
"I have spoken to Director PGI who has deputed top Plastic surgeons of PGI for surgery, which just started. The Nihang group will be arrested and further action taken soon," they informed.
Punjab has already extended the state-wide lockdown to stem the spread of the deadly Novel Coronavirus till May 1.
After holding a meeting with his cabinet ministers, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh had announced the decision.
