Possible to be anti-govt and still pro-India: Mahua Moitra
New Delhi, July 24 (IBNS): Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra today called the The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Bill, 2019, “anti-federalism, anti-constitutional and anti-people” and said it was possible to be "anti-government and still be pro-India".
The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha today after a division with 287 members supporting the bill and eight opposing it.
Opposition members, including Congress, DMK and NCP, staged walkout when their demand for sending the legislation to standing Committee was not taken up. Members of Trinamool Congress had walked out earlier when their demand for a clarification was not taken up.
Moitra, known for her powerful oratory, accused the government of unleashing a “troll army” against the Opposition.
Speaking on the bill, she said: "The Opposition is termed anti-national every time we disagree with the government on issues of national security.”
Minister of state for parliamentary affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal denied it and said the BJP had “never called anyone anti-national.”
Moitra clarified that her statement was against propaganda and not a single member.
She said the bill sought to designate individuals as terrorists without due process.
