Presidential election: Mamata flies off to New Delhi to meet Sonia Gandhi
Pranab Mukherjee's term as a president will expire in the month July, and the Congress president is expected to meet Trinamool Congress supremo on Tuesday, to decide the possible face to be projected from the opposition's side in the presidential election.
The meeting between Banerjee and Gandhi raised the political controversy already in the state, particularly after the recent clashes and confrontation between the two parties in the municipal election of the state.
The president of the Congress' state unit, Adhir Chowdhury, in a letter to the party's national president, explained that they (state Congress) are fighting against both the communal (Bharatiya Janata Party) and the undemocratic forces (Trinamool Congress).
The meeting between Banerjee and Gandhi further enhanced the speculation of bringing the opposition forces closer to formthe unified opposition, with an aim to counter the BJP in the Lok Sabha poll in 2019.
Speaking about the opposition provided by the state Congress and her meet with Gandhi for the presidential election, Banerjee said: "Locally in West Bengal, CPI(M), Congress and BJP are doing together (fighting against TMC). It is their problem and not my headache. My options are always open for the betterment of the country and the party. That is why when good decisions or suggestions come, our mind is always positive."
