Pressure mounting up on Prithviraj Chavan to resign?
New Delhi, May 18 (IBNS): With Nitish Kumar resigning as the Bihar Chief Minister following the humiliating defeat of his Janata Dal-United at the hands of ally-turned-foe Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Lok Sabha elections, pressure is now building up on Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan to do the same.
Although Chavan has taken the moral responsibility of Congress' loss in the state, he has left it to the party's high command to decide if he needs to resign, NDTV reported quoting sources.
Meanwhile, the Shiv Sena wants the Maharashtra CM to resign from his post following the defeat of the Congress.
"The way Nitish Kumar resigned as the CM of Bihar, we want Prithviraj Chavan to resign as well. People have rejected him, he must resign on moral grounds," Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut told media on Sunday.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister designate Narendra Modi, BJP-led NDA registered a massive victory in the Lok Sabha polls to wipe out the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre.
The Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) were decimated in Maharashtra, especially in Mumbai.
The losing candidates included union ministers Sushil Kumar Shinde and Praful Patel. Congress MPs Priya Dutt and Milind Deora also lost their seats in Mumbai.
