Prez writes to Maharashtra Guv conveying his condolences on loss of lives in Mumbai stampede
In his message, the President has said: “I am sad to learn about the stampede on a foot overbridge in Mumbai in which a number of people lost their lives and others sustained serious injuries."
"My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the accident. I am sure the State Government and other agencies are taking necessary steps to provide all possible help to the bereaved families as well as medical assistance to the injured," said he.
"Please convey my heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. I wish a speedy recovery to those injured," the president said.
The toll in Mumbai's Elphinstone railway station stampede rose to 23 after a person succumbed to his injuries on Saturday, while Maharashtra Navanirman Sena chief Raj Tahckeray threatened to stall the bullet train project unless the railway infrastructure was improved.
The tragedy occurred on Friday morning on a narrow footbridge linking Elphinstone Road and Parel suburban railway stations. Altogether 38 people were also injured.
Police officials attributed the stampede to the rains and overcrowding.
