Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to hold roadshow in Varanasi today
Varanasi (UP), May 15 (UNI): Taking electioneering to its ultimate excitement, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday will stage an all important roadshow here - wherein party candidate Ajay Rai is taking on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to senior Congress leader Mohan Prakash, the roadshow will be brought out between venue near Pt Madan Mohan Malviya statue till Kashi Vishwanath.
Priyanka will also offer pooja at the Kashi Vishwanath temple.
This is Priyanka Gandhi's first visit to the temple city since Congress nominated Ajay Rai against Prime Minister.
Congress spokesperson Satish Kumar Rai said before arriving Varanasi, Ms Priyanka will also visit nearby Salempur and address a gathering and stage a roadshow.
Ajay Rai had contested against Prime Minister in 2014 as well and had finished third - after Mr Modi and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal.
For sometime there was speculation that Priyanka Gandhi could contest from Varanasi. But as she opted out from the race, the Congress camp and especially minority women were demoralised.
However, Ajay Rai said that the party is battle ready for the contest against the Prime Minister.
"Every Congress men and women will be giving their best for the battle royal on May 19".
Senior Congress leader Mohan Prakash sought to turn the table against Mr Modi and said by constant use of "abusive" language Prime Minister has lost right to represent the people of Varanasi as citizens here over centuries are known here for cultured behaviour.
The contest in Varanasi is heading for a triangular fight. SP-BSP-RLD alliance has fielded Shalini Yadav of Samajwadi party for the constituency.
BJP leader Ashok Pandey has meanwhile said the battle is one sided in Varanasi.
He has also mocked that a fierce battle is on card between Congress and Samajwadi for the runners up prize.
SP candidate Shalini Yadav has dismissed such a proposition and claimed the alliance will give a tough fight to the Prime Minister.
