Prophet Row: Owaisi demands Nupur Sharma's arrest

Hyderabad/UNI: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) President Asaddudin Owaisi on Monday demanded the arrest of suspended BJP National spokesperson Nupur Sharma for her anti-Islam remark against Prophet Muhammad and his wife during a TV debate.

Talking to the media, Owaisi attacked the foreign policy of the Narendra Modi government and termed the suspension of Sharma from the BJP "a sham".

He recalled that several Islamic nations summoned Indian envoys to lodge their protest over the controversy.

“India has lost face. The country’s foreign policy was destroyed. I demand her arrest, not just suspension,” the Hyderabad Lok Sabha MP said.

Owaisi alleged leaders like Sharma enjoy the support of the party bigwigs and charged that the BJP deliberately sends its spokespersons to TV debates to make inflammatory statements.

Countries like Kuwait, Qatar, Iran and Saudi Arabia have issued statements expressing their displeasure over the comments made by Sharma. Qatar and Kuwait had even summoned the Indian ambassadors and handed over to them protest notes.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also tweeted on the row followed by a rebuttal from New Delhi as the Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement asking Islamabad to stay out of India's affairs.
