Rahul Gandhi files nomination from Amethi after holding roadshow
Amethi, Apr 10 (IBNS): After holding a roadshow, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday filed his nomination from Uttar Pradesh's Amethi, the bastion of the grand old party.
Rahul was accompanied by his mother Sonia Gandhi, sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and brother-in-law Robert Vadra.
While Sonia is the chairperson of United Progressive Alliance, Priyanka is the Congress chief in eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Before filing nomination, the Congress chief, who is also fighting from Kerala's Wayanad in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, held a roadshow with Sonia, Priyanka and Robert.
BJP's Smriti Irani, who was defeated in Amethi in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, will once again face Rahul in 2019.
Rahul, the outgoing MP of Amethi, faced criticism from Kerala's ruling party Left for contesting from Wayanad at a time the opposition parties are trying to come close to oust the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from the Centre.
However, after filing his nomination from Wayanad, the Congress supremo had said he won't speak a word against the CPI-M during his campaigning.
Stating his reason to fight from Kerala, Rahul had said he wanted to give a message to south India which he feels was overlooked by the BJP government.
Criticising Rahul's decision to fight from Wayanad, Irani had said the Congress president betrayed Amethi and fled to a new seat.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP's main poll campaigner, had stirred a row saying Rahul went to Wayanad as it is a Muslim-dominated seat.
The Lok Sabha elections will be held in seven phases from Apr 11 to May 19.
The results will be declared on May 23.
