New Delhi, Aug 28 (IBNS): Congress chief Rahul Gandhi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday congratulated MK Stalin for becoming the new Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president.

Stalin (65), the son of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister late Muthuvel Karunanidhi, succeeded his father.

Rahul tweeted to say, "Congratulations to Shri M K Stalin on being elected President of the DMK. I wish him happiness & success as he begins a new chapter in his political journey. "

Wishing the DMK president, Mamata, who is also the Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief, said in a tweet, "Congratulations and best wishes to @mkstalin for being elected President of the DMK @arivalayam"

The DMK president's post had fallen vacant after party patriarch Karunanidhi's demise on Aug 7, 2018.

Stalin became the working president of the party in 2017.

Following Karunanidhi's death, a succession war within the party took place with Alagiri, the other son of the late DMK president, claiming several party loyalists are with him.

Alagiri was expelled from the DMK in 2014 for "anti-party activities".
