New Delhi/UNI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday slammed the Modi government over rising unemployment, as unemployment rose to over eight per cent in August.

"Modi is harmful for employment," Gandhi said in a tweet.

In a tweet in Hindi, Gandhi said any business that is not owned by 'friends' is not supported by the government.

"The expect people to participate in this drama of self-reliance," he said, referring to the government's campaign for 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' or self-reliant India.

According to the date released by the centre for Monitoring the Indian Economy, CEMI, the unemployment rate rose from 6.95 per cent in July to 8.32 percent in August 2021.

The data also showed that the number dipped from 399.38 million in July to 397.78 million in August, with nearly 1.3 million job losses in rural India alone.
