Rajasthan Civic poll results : BJP and Congress in close race
While the ruling party won 891 of the 2,134 wards for which results have been declared, the Congress bagged 770 wards.
The election was being dubbed the first acid test for Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, after she got embroiled in a controversy involving the scam-tainted cricket tycoon Lalit Modi.
The trend of the results, most of which have been declared, does not appear to be on the line of the spectacular victory BJP scripted in the last Assembly and Lok Sabha elections in a span of two years under Raje's stewardhsip.
The BJP, which had swept elections to 46 municipalities in November last, had expected to perform much better this time.
Moreover, the Chief Minister has reasons to feel upset with the opposition Congress winning two civic bodies in Jhalawar, her Assembly constituency.
Results for 2,134 of the total 3,351 wards have been announced so far and the counting is going on, said the state election commission's spokesperson.
Meanwhile, Independent candidates won 456 wards whereas BSP, CPI and CPI(M) got 12, four and one seats respectively.
The August 17 election for 129 civic bodies in the state had witnessed a record polling of 76.19 per cent.
