New Delhi, May 21 (IBNS): Congress president Rahul Gandhi along with his mother, Sonia Gandhi, and sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, paid tribute to former Indian Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, on the latter's 27th death anniversary on Monday.

Rahul is the son, Sonia is the wife and Priyanka is the daughter of late Rajiv Gandhi.

Remembering his father's death anniversary, Rahul shared a heart-touching message on Twitter.

Rahul said his father taught him to love and respect all beings.

The tweet reads, "My father taught me that hate is a prison for those who carry it. Today, on his death anniversary, I thank him for teaching me to love and respect all beings, the most valuable gifts a father can give a son. Rajiv Gandhi, those of us that love you hold you forever in our hearts."

Apart from the Gandhi family, former Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, paid floral tribute to his predecessor.

Rajiv Gandhi became the Prime Minister of the country in 1984 following the death of his mother and immediate predecessor Indira Gandhi.

He was the youngest Prime Minister of the country at an age of 40.

He held his office till 1989. In 1991, while he was campaigning for the Congress party ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in Madras (now Chennai).

A woman, who was later identified as Thenmozhi Rajaratnam, bent down to touch his feet during the campaign when she detonated the RDX explosives which was kept under her dress.

Along with the former Prime Minister, 25 people were killed in the explosion.
