Ruckus over Mahanadi water continues in Odisha Assembly
The Opposition, including lawmakers of the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have been demanding the state's Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik's statement on the Mahanadi issue.
After a tumultuous session on Monday, on Tuesday too, the Opposition has been demanding for a clarification about the state's stand on sharing the Mahanadi waters with Chhattisgarh, media reported.
Following the pandemonium on Tuesday morning, the Speaker adjourned the session until 3pm.
On Sep 17, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik visited New Delhi to attend a tripartite talk at the invitation of the Union government along with Chhattisgarh but the outcome of the meeting remained inconclusive with both states refusing to budge from their demands, media reported..
Prior to that, a BJP delegation led by Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had met Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti in New Delhi .
Odisha has been accusing Chhattisgarh of unilaterally constructing projects on the upstream of Mahanadi river which caused decline in the flow of its water to the state, reported The Indian Express.
Chhattisgarh has denied Odisha's charges, with the state's Chief Minister Raman Singh saying that Odisha’s concerns were misplaced, media reported.
