Seven Tripura legislators including 6 BJP-bound TMC MLAs voted for Kovind, 8 Meghalaya MLAs including minister didn’t cast vote
The seven legislators including six TMC MLAs and one Congress MLA of the Tripura assembly had cast their votes in favour of Ram Nath Kovind.
Earlier, the six TMC MLAs were sacked from the party after they had openly announced their support to the NDAs presidential candidate.
“We have already announced our decision and today we voted for Kovind,” Sudip Kumar Barman said.
Apart from the six TMC MLAs, rebel Congress MLA Ratan Lal Nath also voted for the NDAs presidential candidate.
50 legislators of the ruling Left Front including Chief Minister Manik Sarkar cast their votes in the state assembly, while Speaker Ramendra Chandra Debnath cast his vote in West Bengal assembly and two Lok Sabha and lone Rajya Sabha MP from the state voted in the parliament in Delhi.
On the other hand, 124 legislators of the 126-member Assam assembly and three MPs of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) had cast their votes in the Assam assembly on Monday.
The voting for the presidential election was completed three hours before the time limit.
Principal Secretary of Assam assembly Mrigendra Kumar Deka said that, former Chief Minister and Asom Gana Parishad MLA Prafulla Kumar Mahanta voted last at around 1-40 pm.
“The voting went very peacefully. Former Chief Minister and Congress MLA Tarun Gogoi and BPF MLA Kamal Sing Narzary had cast their votes in Delhi while the rest 124 MLAs cast their votes in the Assam assembly. Three AIUDF MPs Badaruddin Ajmal, Sirajuddin Ajmal and Radheshyam Biswas also voted in the assembly,” the Principal Secretary of the Assam assembly said.
On the other hand, eight legislators in the 60-member Meghalaya assembly did not cast their votes in the presidential poll.
According to the reports, state minister and senior Congress leader Martin M Dangoo, Congress legislator Kennedy Khyriem were among the eight legislators who could not cast their votes.
“Martin M Danggo is now undergoing treatment in a Chennai based hospital, while Parliamentary Secretary Justine Dkhar now in Bengaluru. While Independent legislator Julius Kitbok Dorphang, who is presently lodged in the Shillong jail on rape charge of a minor, had not sought to vote in the presidential poll,” a top official of the Meghalaya assembly said.
