Howrah, Sept 13 (IBNS):  Students and youth wing activists of the Left parties clashed with the police in Howrah district of West Bengal on Friday.

Police resorted to lathi-charge and used tear gas shells and water cannons to disperse the protesters.

The protesters were participating in the Sigur To Nabanna Rally.

They were participating in the rally demanding for industries in Bengal and job and education for all.

The rally started from Singur in Hooghly district on Thursday and was scheduled to move towards state secretariat Nabanna when police stopped them midway.

Incidentally, Singur is the venue of the abandoned Tata Nano car plant. A total of 997 acres of land in Singur was given to the Tatas for their dirt-cheap Nano car factory by the previous Left Front government, triggering huge protest led by Mamata Banerjee and supported by various civil society groups.

Twelve Left youth and students' wings were participating in the rally.

They were stopped at central Howrah's Mullick Fatak area.

CPI-M leader Sujan Chakraborty described the incident as 'police brutality'.

"Police brutality at #Nabanna. Tear gas, lathi charge, water canon, bullet. #MadamCM is cordoned by Police & Waging war against students youths. They demand job, but getting severe police repression. Huge attack. Insensitive & inhuman @MamataOfficial," he tweeted.

Another Left leader Md Salim said: "Brutal #Lathicharge water cannon, teargas by @MamataOfficial@WBPoliceto stop #YouthMarch #singurwantsindustry No amount of repressive violence will deter the #YouthsOfBengal from the #BattleForJustice Ruler must not forget #Martyr #JatindraNathDas."
