Sleeping student pees on co-passenger in Delhi-bound American Airlines plane: Report

| @indiablooms | Mar 05, 2023, at 06:39 pm

New Delhi: A passenger on a New York to New Delhi American Airlines flight reportedly urinated on another male passenger while under the influence of alcohol, according to a media report.

Flight AA292 departed from New York at 9:16 pm on Friday and arrived at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport in Delhi at 10:12 pm on Saturday, after a 14-hour and 26-minute journey.

The accused is a student in a US university, the report said citing a source in the airport.

He was intoxicated and urinated in sleep, causing it to leak and fall on another passenger, who then reported the incident to the flight crew, the source said, the report added.

The victim did not want to involve the police in the matter after the student apologised as it would have a negative impact on the offender’s career.

However, the flight crew did not take the matter lightly and reported the incident to the Air Traffic Control (ATC) at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport.

The crew first informed the pilot who then reported the matter to the Air Traffic Control (ATC). The ATC subsequently notified the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), who apprehended the accused passenger and turned him over to the Delhi Police.

The accused was immediately taken into custody once the flight landed, according to the report.

As per the Civil Aviation Rules, if a passenger is found to have engaged in unruly conduct, they may face legal consequences and could also be prohibited from flying for a specific period, the duration of which will depend on the severity of the offense.

In a similar incident, on November 26, a male passenger named Shankar Mishra urinated on a female co-passenger in a drunken state on a New York-Delhi Air India flight.

The incident did not come to light until it was reported in the media. An FIR (First Information Report) was filed, and Mishra was subsequently arrested. After spending almost a month in jail, he was granted bail.

The DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) slapped a fine of Rs 30 lakh on Air India for failing to report the matter within 12 hours of the incident as stipulated by the regulations.

The Delhi Police is investigating the matter, and in the meantime, Mishra has been banned from flying for four months.
