Srinagar, Sept 7 (IBNS): Jammu and Kashmir director general of police (DGP) SP Vaid has been removed from his post on Thursday, officials said.

Vaid wished his 'best wishes' to the new DGP and tweeted: "I’m thankful to God that he gave me the opportunity to serve my people and my country. I’m grateful to @JmuKmrPolice, security agencies, and people of J&K for their support and their faith in me. My best wishes to the new DGP."

He has been appointed as the transport commissioner.

Dilbag Singh, currently director general, prisons, has been appointed as the acting DGP.

"The reshuffle came as Centre and the new governor Satya Pal Malik were not happy over the spike in the incidents of militancy in the Valley, especially the abduction of 12 relatives of policemen by the militants in south Kashmir last week," reported Hindustan Times.

All the relatives were released unharmed after officials also freed a Hizbul Mujahideen fighter's father.

On Tuesday, Vaid had posted a tweet where he termed talk of his removal as a media speculation.
