Special status for Andhra demand disrupts life in state and proceedings in Lok Sabha

New Delhi/Vijaywada, Aug 2 (IBNS): The 'bandh' called by YSR Congress, the main opposition party in Andhra Pradesh, disrupted normal life in the state while the party's members held up proceedings at the Lok Sabha twice on Tuesday, according to media reports.

The party is demanding special category status for Andhra Pradesh.

At the Lok Sabha, members of the TDP, an ally of the NDA government also lent their support to YSR Congress on the issue, media reported.

The fissures between BJP and TDP -- over BJP not providing the desired funds to Andhra Pradesh after Telangan was carved out of it -- is being seen as so serious that there is speculation that the party led by N Chandrababu Naidu could even walk out of the NDA, reported NDTV.

In Andhra Pradesh, the Congress and the Left parties lent their support to the 'bandh'.

Across the state, the police arrested many agitators as they organised protests and tried to prevent state corporation buses from plying.

Protesters were arrested in Vijaywada, Vishakhapatnam and other places, media reported
