New Delhi/UNI: The Centre is keeping a 'close watch' on the Ram Navami celebrations across the country, including Ayodhya, on Thursday in line with the directives to avoid gatherings.

Sources said, the Narendra Modi Government has instructed the state governments to keep a 'strict vigil' on religious congregations and 'intervene' if violations against social distance take place.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday participating at a video conference with the state governments to take stock of the overall situation.

Meanwhile, the number of country-wide death toll due to Coronavius rose to 41 while 1834 people were affected by the dreaded disease.

A Lucknow report said, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has appealed to people to perform puja at homes and make the Ram Navami snaan (holy dip) and Mela at Saryu river a low-key affair.

The Chief Minister had already directed the DMs to reach out to religious heads and ask them to postpone all religious gatherings till April 23, the report said.

Amid concerns over the possibility of a large gathering on the occasion like previous years, the report quoting a government person said, the Ram Navami snaan was not organised by the state administration like the Kumbh Mela and the district authorities only take care of the crowd management.

"Under such an emergency situation it should not be a problem if we restrict the snaan for locals only," the report added quoting the senior official privy to the arrangements for crowd control underway in Ayodhya.

The Ram Navami celebrations are set to start amidst reports of more than 45,000 people succumbing to COVID- 19 across the globe.
