Supreme Court should ban alliances in the name of India, says BSP chief Mayawati

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Supremo Mayawati on Wednesday said 'Bharat' that is India is the well-known and dignified constitutional name of the country and it is neither fair nor justifiable to play or tamper the name.

The BSP supremo said that the Supreme Court itself should take cognisance of this and immediately ban all such organisations, parties and alliances, which have been formed especially in the name of India, otherwise the dignity of the country will also be greatly hurt.

In a statement issued here, Mayawati said, "Bharat, that is India, is the well-known and dignified constitutional name of the country and the people, who belong to all caste and and religion, have immense, love and attachment with the sacred and humanistic Constitution of Baba Saheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar and playing with their feelings by changing or tampering with the respect is neither fair nor justifiable."

She alleged that the opposition itself has given Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) an opportunity to tamper with the Constitution with the name of the country as part of a well-thought-out strategy and conspiracy, by naming their alliance I.N.D.I.A. "There is a possibility that all this is the result of internal collusion between the ruling party and the opposition," the former Chief Minister said.

The BSP supremo said, "People understand the pre-election politics of Congress and BJP, that is, their disgusting game of making India versus India, due to which they have sidelined the special and very important issues of poverty, inflation, unemployment and development. That is why BSP's decision to maintain distance from both these casteist, communal and capitalist alliances is completely right and in the public interest."

She said that BJP, their NDA and the central government, should have moved the Supreme Court against the name India, or a law should be framed in this matter and a ban should be placed on keeping the related name.

"But by not doing, this shallow politics is being done under the guise of it which is not right and is also anti-people," Mayawati said.

The former CM also said, "Therefore, in such a situation, our party would like that the Supreme Court should take cognisance of this and immediately ban all such organisations, parties and alliances, which have been formed especially in the name of our country, otherwise the dignity of our country will be hurt a lot."

She said, "Not only this, anyone will get an open opportunity to tamper with our Constitution every now and then due to this selfish and narrow politics being done by the opposition and now the ruling party in the name of our country."

The BSP supremo said, "I now have full hope that the SC will take cognisance of this matter and will not give an opportunity to any party or front to tamper with the Constitution."

"This is my special appeal," she added.
