Tamil Nadu bandh : Normal life affected, Stalin and others arrested
Chennai, Apr 5 (IBNS) : Normal life was affected in Tamil Nadu as an opposition-sponsored shutdown began in the morning over the Centre's failure to set up a Cauvery management board.
According to reports, DMK working president M.K. Stalin along with few opposition leaders were arrested while leading a demonstration.
Stalin along with TNCC President Su Thirunavukarasar, Congress leader K V Thangkabalu, VK leader Thol Thirumavalavan and Dravida Kazahagam leader K Veeramani squatted on the road near Anna statue in Chenaai's Anna Salai area.
The Hindu said this created a chaos in the Anna Salai and Kamarajar Salai as suddenly DMK cadres and the opposition parties blocked the roads.
According to the reports, the public transport services including suburban trains and MTC buses in Chennai were functioning normally.
The Hindu quoted a senior official of the MTC said almost 3,000 buses are being operated since morning. Similarly, suburban train services on all sections are being operated as per the schedule and without any disturbances.
The bandh made less impact on the normal life in Coimbatore, as vehicles including majority of TNSTC and private buses, plied normally.
However, shops, hotels and commercial establishments remained closed in the morning.
Normal life was, however, hit in many parts of the southern districts of Tamil Nadu. Thought many buses were plying in Madurai, Virudhunagar and Dindigul divisions, as claimed by the transport authorities, not many commuters were seen at the bus depots.
Markets were closed but the roadside tea shops were open.
