Tamil Nadu: Fire breaks out in Meenakshi Temple, several shops gutted

Madurai, Feb 3 (IBNS): The fire which broke out at  East Tower side of the Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple in Tamil Nadu has been brought under control, media reports said.

The fire incident on Friday night left several shops gutted.

The fire was first seen at around 10 pm.

The cause of the fire is still not known.

Police said they have started investigating into the matter.

According to reports, at least 60 fire personnel rushed to the spot to bring the fire under control.

It took nearly five hours to douse the flames.

No injury or casualty has been reported so far.

Madurai collector Veera Raghava Rao told NDTV that the temple has been reopened for devotees.

"The fire was controlled before it spread to the main temple area. We've ordered a probe," he told the news channel.
