TMC decimates BJP in Basirhat months after unrest over Sandeshkhali incident

Kolkata/IBNS: The Trinamool Congress has decimated Bharatiya Janata Party in West Bengal's Basirhat constituency, which locates Sandeshkhali that grabbed the eyeballs across the nation after several women accused local TMC leaders of land grabbing and sexual abuse.

TMC candidate Haji Nurul Islam is leading by over 5,00,000 votes as opposed to BJP's Rekha Patra.

Sandeshkhali, an island in South 24 Parganas, came to spotlight after ED officials raided erstwhile TMC strongman Sheikh Shahjahan.

Upon the raid, several local people chased the officials, attacked them and vandalised their vehicles.

Following the incident, several TMC local women came out to protest demanding arrest of absconding Shahjahan, who was taken into custody by police after 50 days following a trail of political unrest in the area.

The ruling TMC, which had accepted a few foul play in the area, dismissed the allegations largely as a plan by the BJP to malign the incumbent.

Basirhat reflects the electoral outcome of the state where TMC managed to win 31 seats as opposed to BJP's 10.
