TN: Heavy rains kill 55 people in 5 days
Chennai, Nov 13 (IBNS): Heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu has not just stalled life in the state but has also left 55 people dead in the last five days, reports said.
Life was thrown out of gear as train services were disrupted and schools and colleges remained closed in Chennai on Friday after heavy rains lashed the city for the fifth straight day.
Seven people have died in rain-related incidents in the state in the last 24 hours.
The incessant rain that came down with gusto and continued through Thursday night submerged many roads and rail tracks resulting in disruption in surface transport services.
The MeT department has predicted occasional heavy rain through the day and another spell of heavy showers next week following the formation of a new trough of low pressure in the Bay of Bengal.
Railway sources said only five out of nine trains that were scheduled to leave the station were able to depart to their destinations, affecting thousands of passengers.
Schools and colleges are shut in the city following the Met department's forecast. Office-goers had a harrowing time on Friday morning as they had to wade through knee-deep water in many areas.
