Lucknow/IBNS: Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi on Thursday announced the name of 2017 Unnao rape victim's mother as the Congress candidate from a seat in Uttar Pradesh, which is due to go to polls from the next month.

Asha Singh, the mother of the 19-year girl who was raped, has been fielded from Unnao's Bangarmau seat.

Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Kuldeep Sengar, the convict in the case that had triggered massive uproar in the country, had won from the seat last time when the election was held.

Sengar, who is now in jail, remained the MLA till his conviction.

Gandhi Vadra, who is in charge of the Congress in Uttar Pradesh, has already announced to field 40 percent women candidates, in an aim to reach out to the women voters in the upcoming polls.

Uttar Pradesh will go to polls in seven phases from Feb 10 to Mar 7.

The results will be declared on Mar 10.
