Lucknow, Mar 14 (IBNS): In a major development, Samajwadi Party registered a thumping victory in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat as the by-poll result was declared on Wednesday.

Pravin Kumar Nishad of the Samajwadi Party beat BJP's Upendra Dutt Shukla by 21,881 votes to register the victory in the seat.

It was a prestige battle for the BJP as UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath earlier represented the Gorakhpur seat.

By-poll became necessary after Yogi resigned from it to become the CM.

In Phulpur Lok Sabha bypoll seat in the state, Samajwadi Party registered a massive victory over the ruling BJP.

SP's candidate Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel defeated his opponent from the BJP  Kaushlendra Singh Patel by a margin of 59,613 votes.

Yogi has already said that he is accepting the verdict given by the people of the state.
