Veteran actor-politician Ambareesh passes away at 66

Bengaluru, Nov 25 (IBNS): Veteran Kannada actor and former minister Ambareesh passed away in a Bengaluru hospital on Saturday.

He was 66.

Ambareesh was being treated for multiple ailments.

He was rushed to the hospital after a massive cardiac arrest.

Ambareesh earlier collapsed in the evening at his home in JP Nagar and was immediately rushed to the hospital.

He was earlier diagnosed with respiratory and kidney problems as well.

Earlier, he underwent treatment at the Mount Elizabeth hospital of Singapore.

Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy visited the hospital late on Saturday night.

He had requested the supporters to maintain peace and law and order.

Kumaraswamy announced that the funeral  the veteran actor-politician will be held at Bengaluru's Kanteerava Studios on Monday.

Fans and supporters are paying their last tributes to Ambareesh 7.30 am onwards on Sunday at the Kanteerava Stadium.

"With a heavy heart visited the hospital and met the grieving family members of my dear friend rebel star #Ambareesh. In consultation with the family, I have instructed to make arrangements for the public and fans to pay last respects to the departed leader at Kanteerava Stadium.," he tweeted.

Condoling the demise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi noted: "Shri Ambareesh will always be remembered for his memorable performances as an actor and extensive contribution to politics. He was a strong voice for Karnataka’s welfare, at the state and central level. Pained by his demise. Condolences to his family & admirers.”

Reacting to the news, Cogress President Rahul Gandhi tweeted: "In the passing of Ambareesh Ji, the Congress family has lost a valuable member. He was a famous son of Karnataka, whose work as an actor & and in politics, won him a huge following both in the state & across India. My condolences to his family and friends in this time of grief."

Ambareesh was an Indian film actor and a politician from the Karnataka state.

Following his debut in Puttanna Kanagal's National Award winning film Naagarahaavu (1972), his acting career commenced with a brief phase of portraying antagonistic and supporting characters in Kannada films.

After establishing himself as a lead rebellion actor in a number of commercially successful films, he became synonymous with the term "rebel star".

He also earned the nickname Mandayada Gandu and continued to hold a matinee idol status in the popular culture of Karnataka.
