New Delhi, May 2 (IBNS): In a significant development, industrialist Vijay Mallya resigned as Rajya Sabha MP on Monday.

According to reports, the liquor baron, who was an independent MP in the Upper House of the Indian Parliament, has sent his resignation letter to chairman of Rajya Sabha Mohammad Hamid Ansari.

The Ethics Committee of the Rajya Sabha on Apr 25 recommended liquid baron Vijay Mallya's expulsion from the Upper House of the Indian Parliament.

Mallya is wanted in India for defaulting on repayment of the bank loans.

The Committee had given Mallya a week time to give his response.

The issue of Mallya's expulsion was discussed during a meeting of the Committee.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) earlier finally revoked Vijay Mallya's passport as the liquid baron is wanted in India for defaulting on repayment of the bank loans.

Mallya, who is currently outside India, has been put on the dock for defaulting on repayment of the bank loans extended to the now-defunct  Kingfisher Airlines, of which he was the Chairman.
