Violence breaks out in JNU campus after students' union president attacked: Reports

New Delhi/IBNS: The Jawaharlal Nehru University students union president was attacked within the university premises, after which violence has broken out on the campus on Sunday evening, NDTV and other media reports said. Videos showed some masked men on a rampage though details are not known immediately.

"Sabarmati Hostel: right now. They are beating the students who are inside. Knocking on doors with rods. People are jumping from balconies," tweeted the official student union of JNU which has blamed the attack on Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student body affiliated to RSS.

JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh was attacked by the masked men and she was bleeding as seen on a video now circulating in media.

ABVP on the other hand blamed the attack on the Leftist students and claimed that the brutal attack was orchestrated by the SFI, AISA, DSF on them.

More details of the incident are awaited.

Political reactions:

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal reacted to the developments and tweeted: "I am so shocked to know abt the violence at JNU. Students attacked brutally. Police shud immediately stop violence and restore peace. How will the country progress if our students will not be safe inside univ campus?"

Reacting to the incident, CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury posted: "Masked attackers entered JNU while law enforcers stood by. This video is what RSS/BJP want to convert India to. They will not be allowed to succeed."

Lt Governor of Delhi Anil Baijal described the incidents which took place in the prestigious Indian institution as 'highly condemnable'.

"The violence in JNU against students and teachers is highly condemnable. Directed @DelhiPolice to take all possible steps in coordination with JNU Administration to maintain law and order & take action against the perpetrators of violence. The situation is being closely monitored," he said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerhee said: "We strongly condemn brutality unleashed agst students/teachers in JNU. No words enough to describe such heinous acts. A shame on our democracy. Trinamool delegation led by Dinesh Trivedi (SajdaAhmed, ManasBhunia, VivekGupta) headed to DEL to show solidarity with #ShaheenBagh #JNU."
