WB gang rape: Hakim blames VHP's 'Ghar wapsi' campaign over incident

Kolkata, Mar 15 (IBNS): Political blame game has started over the alleged gang rape case of the 72-year-old nun of a school-cum-convent in West Bengal's Ranaghat city with state minister Firhad Hakim stating that Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP)'s "ghar vapsi" campaign is responsible for the incident.
"This is not an attack on the nun but on entire humanity. This is because of religious fanaticism. This communal flare up is taking place everywhere because of ghar vapsi campaigns," Hakim told mediapersons.

He said the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) will find out all responsible for this incident.

Even the Congress party blamed the saffron group over the incident.

Congress leader PC Chacko said, "The Chief Minister has ordered a probe, but we know what happens to such probes. It is true that the ghar vapsi activities are creating communal tension, the RSS should understand that now."

Meanwhile, five people have been detained in connection with the gang rape case, reports said on Sunday.

The arrests were made based on CCTV footage.

Continuing the horror of crimes against women, around eight dacoits allegedly gang raped the nun late on Friday night.

The nun was in a critical condition on Saturday. She underwent a surgery too.

According to reports, the accused broke into the Convent of Jesus and Mary after 1 am and allegedly raped the "ailing nun".

Initial reports said, the dacoits broke into the convent with an intention of robbery.

The victim was rushed to the hospital in the morning.

In the wake of the incident, angry school students on Saturday blocked trains on the Sealdah-Ranaghat route and National Highway 34 to protest.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had ordered a probe by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) into the incident.

"We strongly condemn the incident that took place at the Ranaghat Convent," Banerjee had said in a tweet posted by by AITC.

"We have ordered a CID probe for the Ranaghat Convent incident. The Govt will take strict steps against the culprits," she  had stated.

"CID will be examining all aspects to this horrific crime. Swift, strongest action to be taken," added the CM.
