WB: Section 144 lifted from violence-torn Birbhum
Birbhum, Nov 3 (IBNS): Bringing some relief, the West Bengal Police has withdrawn Section 144 from the violence-hit Birbhum, 11 days after clashes broke out between Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Makhra village.
Three people were also killed despite the prohibitory orders.
West Bengal’s Birbhum district was recently turned into a political battleground as senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, including Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, were arrested when they tried to enter a village despite prohibitory orders imposed in the region, triggering another conflict with the ruling Trinammol Congress (TMC) in the state.
Besides Naqvi, the BJP's Central delegation included senior leaders such as Kirti Azad, Udit Raj and West Bengal's party unit President Rahul Sinha.
The leaders were later released on bail.
Following his arrest, Naqvi told media: "The police behaved undemocratically today. It seemed that they were aiming to shield anarchists and terrorists."
"If the government had spent half the energy they used to arrest us in apprehending the anti-nationals, it would have been better," he had said.
Naqvi said the 'condition' of the state is not good at the present moment.
