We want to hear from horse's mouth: Adhir Chowdhury demands Modi's statement on Kashmir row

New Delhi, July 24 (IBNS): Congress Lok Sabha leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Wednesday said his party wants to hear from Prime Minister Narendra Modi whether he had sought help from US President Donald Trump in solving the Kashmir issue.

"We are having doubts because neither Trump nor Modi called it a false. We want to hear from the horse's mouth. We want to learn from PM Modi. What's wrong in it? Whenever we raise voice, the government tries to suppress it. We can't allow that," Adhir said reiterating his party's demand over the entire issue.

Countering Adhir, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said in the parliament, "The External Affairs Minister has clearly stated that there was no discussion between Narendra Modi and Donald Trump over Kashmir. That is the best possible clarification we can have."

Fueled by the statement made by Donald Trump's adviser in support of the US President's Kashmir remark, the Opposition created a ruckus in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, demanding a clarification from Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself.

The Opposition including the Congress have raised slogan "Prime Minister, give reply".

Amid the controversy which developed after Trump claimed that Modi sought help from the US to solve the Kashmir crisis, the US President's Chief Economic Adviser Larry Kudlow said the leader "does not make up things".

When asked by a reporter, Kudlow was quoted as saying by media: "The President does not make anything up."

"I am going to stay out of that. It's outside of my lane," he further said.

Rubbishing US President Donald Trump's claim, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar told the Parliament on Tuesday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi never sought help from the American President to resolve the Kashmir issue with Pakistan.

Addressing the Rajya Sabha, the lower house of the parliament, Jaishankar said: "It should be clear that Prime Minister Narendra Modi didn't seek help from Donald Trump over the Kashmir issue. We will discuss the issue with Pakistan only bilaterally. Talks can only take place if the cross-border terrorism ends."

What did Trump say?

Earlier reports said US President Donald Trump has offered to help resolve the Kashmir issue between India and Pakistan during his meeting with Pakistan President Imran Khan in Washington.

Hosting Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan at the White House on Monday, Trump said: “If I can help, I would love to be a mediator.” “If I can do anything to help, let me know,” he added, according to reports.

"I was with Prime Minister Modi two weeks ago and we talked about this subject and he actually said 'Would you like to be a mediator or arbitrator', I said 'Where', He said 'Kashmir'. Because this has been going on for many, many years... I think they would like to see it resolved and you (Imran Khan) would like to see it resolved. If I can help, I would love to be a mediator," President Trump said at the joint media briefing with Imran Khan.

The US has held for long that the Kashmir issue should be sorted by India and Pakistan bilaterally.
