West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee remembers Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on birth anniversary

Kolkata, Mar 17 (IBNS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday paid homage to Bangladesh's founding father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on his 99th birth anniversary.

"Homage to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on his birth anniversary. বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের জন্মদিবসে শ্রদ্ধার্ঘ্য," she tweeted.

Bangladesh is observing the birth anniversary of the leader.

The day is also celebrated in the Asian nation as National Children’s Day.

Bangladesh President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina earlier int he day lay wreaths at the mausoleum of Bangabandhu at Tungipara in Gopalganj.

Special events are being held across the nation to remember the leader. 

Rahman was the founding father of the People's Republic of Bangladesh.

He served as the first President of Bangladesh and later Prime Minister of Bangladesh from March 1971 until his assassination in August 1975.

He is considered to be the driving force behind the independence of Bangladesh.
