West Bengal DM, who thrashed youth in police station, transferred
Kolkata, Jan 10 (IBNS): Four days after thrashing and threatening a youth inside a police station, the District Magistrate (DM) of West Bengal's Alipurduar district, Nikhil Nirmal, was transferred as the Managing Director (MD) of state Tribal Development Cooperative Corporation Ltd. on Thursday, officials said.
According to reports, another IAS officer Subhanjan Das, who was posted as the Additional Secretary of Health and Family Welfare department, will replace Nikhil Nirmal as Alipurduar DM.
Publishing a notification on Thursday, the state government announced the transfers.
Meanwhile, Commissioner of state I&CA department and CEO of Nandan, Mahua Banerjee, has been appointed as the new Additional Secretary of Health Family Welfare department.
Earlier on Sunday, a 5 minutes 52 seconds long video clip, showing how young IAS officer Nikhil Nirmal and his wife Nandhini Krishnan beat up a man inside Falakata Police Station for allegedly posting lewd and abusive comments about Nandhini, went viral on social media.
The footage also showed that Falakata PS's Inspector-in-Charge (IC), Soumyajit Roy, was present at the scene and he did not try to stop the DM and his wife from attacking the man who was in police custody.
Following the incident, the state government had sent the DM on a 10-day compulsory leave while Falakata PS' IC Soumyajit Roy was replaced by Cooch Behar's Kotwali Police Station's IC Samir Pal.
Soumyajit Roy has been transferred to Kotwali PS in Cooch Behar.
Meanwhile, based on a complaint lodged by the father of the youth, who was thrashed by DM and his wife, local police have registered an FIR against the IAS officer and his wife under bailable IPC sections 323 (Voluntarily causing hurt) and 506 (Criminal intimidation).
The then IC of Falakata PS, Soumyajit Roy, also registered a suo-motto complaint against the couple which is still being considered as a general diary (GD), according to sources.
Human rights organization Association for the Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR) has already lodged a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission against the IAS and his wife.
