West Bengal's COVID-19 tally nears 50,000 mark with biggest single-day spike of 2291 cases, 39 more deaths reported

Kolkata/IBNS: With highest single-day spike of 2291 infections and 39 deaths, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in West Bengal has mounted to 49321, including 18450 active cases, 1221 deaths and 29650 discharges, state health department said on Wednesday.

According to a bulletin issued by West Bengal Health and Family Welfare (WBHFW) department, in the last 24 hours, a record number of 1615 Covid-19 patients were discharged from different health facilities across the state, taking the recovery rate to 60.11 per cent from 59.61 per cent.

Officials said that  in the last 24 hours, state capital Kolkata and its adjoining district, North 24 Parganas, registered the highest number of fresh Covid-19 cases-- 692 and 624 respectively, while these two neighbouring districts reported 26 more deaths (Kolkata-15 and North 24 Parganas-11).

State officials reported that as on Wednesday (July 22), Bengal had 930 broad-based containment zones, out of which 28 were in Kolkata.   

West Bengal has tested 7,43,469 samples till date with 14040 tests conducted in 56 testing facilities across the state in the past 24 hours, reports said.

Currently, 3489 persons are kept in government quarantine centres and 31320 people are under home surveillance in the state.

Meanwhile, the West Bengal government has announced to enforce complete lockdown in the entire state on July 23, 25 and 29 in addition to the ongoing lockdown in broad-based containment zones as the state is suspecting that a community transmission of Covid-19 had begun in some parts of the state.
